The history of the condom
from animal skin to ultra-thin latex
Condoms are currently among the most widely used methods for safe sex. They not only protect against unwanted pregnancy, but also against many sexually transmitted infections (STIs). What many people don't know is that the condom has existed for thousands of years. The materials and techniques have changed enormously over the centuries, but the goal has always remained the same: enjoying sex safely and carefreely.
In this blog, I will take you through the fascinating history of the condom.

The first condoms in antiquity
The oldest depictions that resemble condoms date back to ancient Egypt, thousands of years ago. Historians suspect that these early protectors were made of linen and were possibly intended as protection against infections or parasites. There are also indications that various civilizations used animal membranes or bladders as a primitive form of a condom.
Although these early variants were far from comfortable, they show that people have been thinking about sexual health and protection for a very long time.
Protection against diseases
In the sixteenth century, the condom took on a much more important role. The Italian physician Gabriele Falloppio described a linen sheath intended to protect against syphilis, which was a life-threatening disease at the time. This is often seen as the first scientifically described application of the condom.
Animal skin condoms
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, condoms were often made from sheep intestines or other animal membranes. These were thin, could be used multiple times, and were especially popular among the wealthier population.
Although these condoms worked better than earlier variants, they were expensive and not always reliable.
The invention of rubber changed everything
The nineteenth century
A huge breakthrough came in 1839 with the vulcanization of rubber. This allowed rubber condoms to be produced on a larger scale. They were sturdier, cheaper, and more resistant to wear and tear.
The first rubber condoms were still quite thick and had seams, which limited wearing comfort.
The arrival of latex
In the twentieth century, latex was introduced. This led to the ultra-thin condoms as we know them today. Latex made condoms:
- thinner;
- more elastic;
- more reliable;
- more comfortable.
As a result, usage grew enormously worldwide.
The condom during the HIV epidemic
In the 1980s, the view on condoms changed again. Due to the rise of HIV and AIDS, safe sex became more important than ever. Governments and health organizations launched major information campaigns that centered the condom as protection against STIs.
Since then, the condom has become not just a contraceptive, but above all an important tool for sexual health.
Modern condoms are smarter than ever
Today's condoms are vastly different from their predecessors. Manufacturers are constantly developing new materials and techniques to improve comfort and sensation.
Nowadays, you can choose from:
Extra thin condoms
For a natural sensation during sex.
Extra strong condoms
Ideal for more intense sex or when extra security is desired.
Condoms with lubricant
For extra comfort and less friction.
Latex-free condoms
Suitable for people with a latex allergy.

The future of the condom
Innovation does not stand still. Manufacturers are constantly researching new materials such as polyisoprene and other latex-free alternatives. Work is also underway on even thinner condoms that combine maximum protection with the most natural feeling possible.
Why a good condom remains important
Despite all technological developments, one message remains unchanged:
A well-fitting condom is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself and your partner. Therefore, always choose a quality condom that suits your needs and combine it with a suitable lubricant if necessary.
