The Difference Between “Nice Guys™” and Real Allies for Women
There are many well-meaning men who struggle to understand the difference between being nice to women and actually being an ally to women and feminist causes.
In addition, there is another category: men who pretend to be nice in order to manipulate women for sex or romance. We often call this type the “Nice Guy™”.
In this article, we help sincere, nice men become better allies – and explain the crucial difference.
What is a “Nice Guy™”?
The term Nice Guy™ has taken on a negative connotation, especially within feminist circles.
Typical characteristics of a Nice Guy™:
- Sees sex as the end goal of interacting with women
- Considers friendship without romance a “failure”
- Expects a reward (like sex) for basic kindness
- Tries to induce guilt upon rejection
- Complains that “women only go for jerks”
When rejected, his behavior often changes quickly from “nice” to angry or insulting.
This behavior is often associated with misogyny and a lack of respect for women.
The Problem: Good Intentions Are Not Always Enough
Perhaps you don't recognize yourself in this. Perhaps you are simply a sincere, nice man.
Still, it is important to understand that:
- Men are socially conditioned with certain gender roles
- Even well-meaning men can unconsciously exhibit sexist behavior
- “Being nice” does not automatically mean you are acting equitably
Example
Paying for lunch for a female friend might be kindly intended, but if it stems from the idea that she is “less independent,” it might be perceived differently.
Gender Roles and Unconscious Sexism
How culture influences us
In films, series, and media, we often see:
- Male-female relationships with a romantic or sexual goal
- Men as dominant and protective
- Women as vulnerable or dependent
This influences how we see and treat relationships.
The problem with chivalry
Many men are taught that they should treat women “specially”:
- Holding the door open
- Pulling out chairs
- Always paying
While this seems friendly, it can also imply that women are less capable.
👉 Do not treat someone well because she is a woman, but because you value her as a person.
Respect: See Women As Humans, Not Roles
A commonly heard phrase is:
“Respect her, she is someone's mother/daughter.”
But that is not the core issue.
The right basis:
- Respect women because they are human beings
- Not because of their relationship to others
- Let women indicate themselves how they want to be treated
Being Only Nice Is Not Enough
Many men think:
“I'm not a sexist, so I'm doing it right.”
But that is a low bar.
Important reality:
- Passivity can contribute to the problem
- Not intervening = implicit support for unwanted behavior
- Allyship requires action, not just intention
How Do You Become A Better Ally?
1. Understand what feminism really is
Feminism simply means:
- Equality for everyone
- Breaking down harmful gender roles
It is not an attack on men – it actually helps men to be freer as well.
2. Listen instead of dominating
As an ally:
- Listen to women's experiences
- Acknowledge that you don't know everything
- Avoid taking over conversations
👉 You are an ally, not a spokesperson.
3. Call out other men
An important role for men:
- Correct sexist behavior
- Make boundaries clear
- Create awareness in your environment
4. Do not expect a reward
Being an ally is not a strategy to:
- Appear more attractive
- “Score points” with women
Do it because it is the right thing to do.
Talk To Women In Your Life
One of the most powerful steps:
- Ask how they experience your behavior
- Be open to feedback
- Reflect on your own behavior
This doesn't have to be complicated – start small and honestly.
From “Nice Guy” to True Ally
Nice men have enormous potential:
- You already care about women
- You want to do the right thing
- You are open to growth
That is a strong foundation.
Conclusion: Growth Goes Beyond Niceness
“Being nice” is a start – not an end point.
True change requires:
- Self-reflection
- Active action
- Consciously dealing with privilege
👉 The “nice guys” of today can become the allies of tomorrow.
