Why self-confidence is more attractive than playing the 'bad boy'
You don't have to be arrogant, harsh, or indifferent to be considered attractive. In fact, a combination of self-confidence, clarity, and warmth can be much more appealing.
I'm Simone from Happytoys, and I find it interesting how often it is said that women are drawn to ‘bad boys’, arrogant types, or men who act a bit distant. But perhaps there is a completely different explanation behind that.
Because what is sometimes seen as ‘bold’ or ‘confident’ behavior is not always an attraction to unkindness. Often, it’s actually about something else: someone who stays calm, knows what he wants, has boundaries, and doesn't constantly need validation.
So you definitely don't have to become a bad boy. You can just be a sweet man. But one who stands firm in his shoes.
1. Self-confidence often feels safer than being overly nice
A man who says "I don't mind" to everything, never gives his opinion, and is constantly trying to please everyone can eventually come across as insecure.
That doesn't mean, of course, that being nice is unattractive. On the contrary. Warmth, humor, and attention are incredibly important.
The difference between being nice and self-effacement
There is a big difference between:
"I’d love to join you, you choose where we eat."
and:
"I don’t care at all, you just tell me what to do."
In the first case, you are flexible. In the second case, you hardly show who you really are.
Self-confidence means you are allowed to have an opinion, make a choice, and also just say no.
2. Clarity is more attractive than endless hesitation
Suppose you like someone and want to ask her out.
You could spend days sending messages and dropping all sorts of hints.
Or you could just say:
"I like you. Shall we go out for a drink on Friday?"
That is clear. And above all: it gives the other person the space to also answer clearly.
A "no" might be a pity, but at least you know where you stand.
Being confident doesn't mean you always get your way
I think this is an important nuance.
Self-confidence does not mean:
"I know what I want and you're going to do it."
It means:
"I know what I want, I dare to express it, and I respect it if you want something else."
The latter is, as far as I'm concerned, a much more attractive form of strength.
3. You don't have to impress with money, status, or looks
Some men try to prove their attractiveness with expensive cars, watches, clothing, connections, or stories about how successful they are.
There is nothing wrong with that, of course, if that's what you happen to love.
But real self-confidence doesn't need to be proven constantly.
Inner value is stronger than bragging
Someone who is content with himself doesn't need to show every minute how great he is.
He can just be present.
Listen.
Have a good conversation.
Be genuinely interested.
And perhaps most importantly: he doesn't need to constantly check if the other person likes him.
That kind of calmness can be much more attractive than constantly trying to impress.
4. Keep your own life while falling in love
A new relationship can of course be wonderful. Suddenly you want to spend every minute together.
But don't forget your own life in the meantime.
Keep exercising. Keep seeing friends. Keep time for work, hobbies, and relaxation.
Attractiveness also lies in independence
You don't have to turn your life upside down just because you like someone.
In fact: when you continue to lead your own life, you have more to talk about with each other in the end.
It doesn't mean you have to act distant. It simply means:
I like you, but I haven't lost myself.
That is something very different from playing games or intentionally waiting a long time to reply.
5. Boundaries are not a wall
Setting boundaries might sound strict, but good boundaries are actually a sign of respect.
For yourself and for the other person.
A clear ‘no’ can be very healthy
For example:
"Tonight doesn't work, but I do have time on Saturday afternoon."
Or:
"I'm not comfortable with that."
Or:
"That's not for me."
You don't have to attach a huge explanation or discussion to it.
A good boundary is often just clear and calm.
6. Warmth and firmness are a great combination
This is perhaps the most important message of the whole story.
You don't have to choose between:
the nice guy
and
the arrogant bad boy.
There is a huge space between those two.
Soft where possible, strong where necessary
You can be caring and clear.
You can be sensitive and confident.
You can listen and take initiative.
You can be romantic and set boundaries.
You can find someone incredibly attractive and still stay true to yourself.
That is not a contradiction. That is maturity.
What does that look like when dating?
Suppose you want to plan a date.
Instead of:
"What do you want to do? When do you want to go? Where do you want to go? I'm fine with anything."
you could, for example, say:
"I know a nice restaurant. Shall we go at 7:00 PM on Friday?"
That is taking initiative.
But subsequently, you can also listen if she wants something else.
"Prefer Saturday? Totally fine."
That is self-confidence without control.
And what about sex?
In the bedroom, too, that combination of warmth and clarity can be very pleasant.
You don't have to pretend you know exactly what your partner likes. In fact, asking questions can be incredibly sexy.
Dare to say what you like
For example:
"I love that."
"Shall we try this?"
"Do you like it when I take the lead?"
That kind of communication often makes sex more exciting.
And when you want to discover something new together, a toy can of course be a fun addition to that.
At Happytoys, for instance, you'll find various sex toys for men, but also products you can use together with your partner.
Self-confidence also means listening
When you experiment together, it's not just about what you want.
Ask what the other person likes, pay attention to reactions, and respect boundaries.
Even with exciting or kinky forms of sex, that principle remains the same.
Taking the lead is different from exerting control.
When ‘bold’ behavior actually becomes a red flag
There is a big difference between self-confidence and unkindness.
A man who can calmly say "no" is not the same as someone who belittles others.
Watch out for these signs
- someone who intentionally insults you to feel bigger;
- someone who keeps testing your boundaries after you've said a clear no;
- jealousy that is sold as ‘protection’;
- someone who tries to determine who you associate with;
- someone who tries to intentionally make you feel insecure.
That is not healthy self-confidence.
Respect remains the foundation.
You don't have to act out self-confidence
Maybe you are shy by nature. Maybe you are introverted. Maybe you find it difficult to stand up for yourself.
That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with you.
Self-confidence is not a personality type that you either have or don't have. You can develop it step by step.
Start small
Say what you really think more often.
Make a plan yourself sometimes.
Say no when something doesn't suit you.
Ask someone out when you like her.
And accept that you won't always get a positive answer.
Because that, too, is part of self-confidence.
My advice as Simone from Happytoys
I wish we could leave the idea of the ‘bad boy’ behind us a little bit.
You don't have to be arrogant.
You don't have to ignore women.
You don't have to play hard to get on purpose.
You don't have to play a tough character.
Just be yourself, but with a solid foundation
Be sweet.
Be funny.
Be attentive.
Listen.
But also know what you want.
Dare to take initiative.
Set boundaries.
Respect the boundaries of others.
And above all, don't forget to have fun.
Because in the end, I don't think attraction is all that complicated. The combination of warmth, self-confidence, humor, and respect is a lot more attractive than any ‘bad boy’ trick.
And if a little bit of tension, curiosity, and fun in the bedroom also comes into play?
Then it really gets interesting. 😉
Love,
Simone
